Women and Girls Lead Community Transformation for Climate Resilience

Islamabad: A two-day national consultation in Islamabad, organized by NDMA’s Gender and Child Cell (GCC) in collaboration with the Gender Task Force and UN agencies, focused on the pivotal roles of women and girls in community transformation, particularly in climate resilience and disaster management. The event underscored the importance of proactive disaster management strategies and the integration of gender considerations into climate strategies.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, the Chairman of NDMA highlighted the disproportionate impact of disasters on vulnerable communities, emphasizing the need for adaptive measures to tackle climate-related challenges. He pointed out the potential of women and girls in building resilience within disaster risk reduction frameworks. Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri stressed that empowering women and girls to assume leadership roles in climate strategies is essential.

Mr. Mohamed Yahya, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, discussed the significance of locally adaptable solutions to promote women’s leadership and innovation. Fareeha Ummar, from UN Women, emphasized the importance of partnerships in advancing gender considerations for climate resilience, noting that collaboration across sectors is crucial to address policy and practice gaps.

The consultation featured interactive discussions, including a panel on the role of Women-Led Organizations in crisis management and gender financing. Panelists included representatives from UNDP, UN Women, Aga Khan Foundation for Habitat, Islamic Relief Pakistan, and VSO. The seminar is set to continue with further discussions involving gender experts and academia.
