Lahore High Court orders to suspend ongoing Police operation at Zaman Park

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): Lahore High Court has ordered to immediately suspend the ongoing Police operation to arrest PTI Chairman Imran Khan at Zaman Park Lahore. Hearing the case, filed by PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry, Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh also ordered the Police force to remain at 500 meters’ distance from the Mall Canal Bridge, Dharampura Bridge and Sunder Das Road. Later, the Court adjourned the hearing till 10 am tomorrow [Thursday].

MoS Khar, PS Rob Oliphant discuss Pak-Canada bilateral relations

Pakistan, US agree to advance transition to renewable energy

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): Pakistan and the United States have agreed to advance transition to renewable energy and promote a more stable, secure and prosperous energy future for both countries. The understanding was reached during Energy Security Dialogue in Islamabad, chaired by Minister for Energy Khurram Dastgir Khan and US Department of State Assistant Secretary for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt.

Under the commitment, the United States will help Pakistan reach its goal of 60 percent renewables by 2030. The United States will also start new programs in Pakistan, including a 500,000 dollars’ project to restore electricity infrastructure in flood-affected areas in Sindh, a grant to promote research and development of electric vehicles at the Lahore University for Management Science and support for the US-Pakistan Women Council in Energy Scholars Program.

On the occasion, both countries also resolved to continue deepening bilateral partnership through the US-Pakistan ‘Green Alliance’ framework. The framework will help them jointly face climate, environmental, and economic needs through partnership on renewable, sustainable, and clean energy.

Newly appointed envoys present credentials to President Arif Alvi

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): Newly appointed envoys of Malaysia, Portugal, Kosovo, Lithuania and Ecuador presented their credentials to President Dr Arif Alvi in Islamabad today. They also made separate calls on the President.

Welcoming the High Commissioner of Malaysia, the President said Pakistan wants to further strengthen bilateral relations with that country in the areas of economy, trade, defence, education, tourism, science and technology.

During his meeting with the Ambassador of Portugal, Dr Arif Alvi said Pakistan and Portugal have great scope of cooperation in the fields of trade, agriculture and investment and Portuguese companies should invest in Pakistan in diverse fields. He said business delegations should be facilitated to explore areas of cooperation.

During his meeting with the Ambassador of Kosovo, the President said Pakistan is desirous of promoting closer cooperation with Kosovo and being an emerging market offers numerous investment opportunities. He emphasized the need for increased exchange of high-level visits between the two countries.

Talking to the Ambassador of Lithuania, Dr Arif Alvi highlighted the need to develop a mechanism increasing mutual trade and cooperation. Talking to the Ambassador of Ecuador, the President said Pakistan looks forward to enhancing political, economic, trade and cultural relations with Ecuador by developing institutional frameworks for the purpose.

Senate holds special session to mark Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Upper House

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Senate began its special commemorative session at the Parliament House in Islamabad on Wednesday morning with Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani in the chair. The special commemorative session marks the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Senate of Pakistan.

At the outset, the Chairman highlighted the role of the Upper House in strengthening parliamentary democracy in Pakistan. He announced that the current session will continue for three days.

In his address, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said the relationship between the federation and provinces has been defined in the Constitution, which must be respected in letter and spirit.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori stressed the need for reposing trust in the people of Pakistan to forge national unity in the country. Balochistan Governor Malik Abdul Wali Khan Kakar commended the role of Pakistan in giving equality to all the federating units of the country.

Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Haji Ghulam Ali said the state of Pakistan should fulfill its promises made with the people of erstwhile tribal areas. He said a sense of deprivation of the people of merged districts must be addressed.

Azad Kashmir Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan said we have to respect the Constitution and there is a need to reset our priorities for the sake of the country. He said unity and harmony amongst the people of Pakistan provides strength to the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, who are facing oppression at the hands of Indian forces.

Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said the Senate has served as a critical check on the power of the executive and has been instrumental in shaping legislative policies that had a profound impact on the lives of our citizens.

Chairman Pakistan Bankers Association and President Habib Bank Muhammad Aurangzeb said cooperative rehabilitation and digitization of the economy need urgent reforms to allow and encourage struggling companies to successfully rehabilitate themselves; otherwise the grim state of our non-performing loans will continue to worsen.

He said in relation to digitization of the economy, we have made commendable legislation. He, however, said an urgent up-gradation of our legislation framework is the need of the hour.

Representative of Pakistan Bar Council Hassan Raza Pasha said everyone talks of the judiciary’s intervention into the affairs of the parliament and the executive. He said we should resolve our problems on the floor of the House instead of taking them to courts.

He said the legal fraternity has always rendered sacrifices for the sake of democracy and we will continue to offer the same in future. He urged the political leaders to come forward to save the country, while lawyers will extend all possible support in this regard.

He said we have invited leadership of political parties for a national dialogue to steer the country out of present crises. He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has accepted our invite, while we are waiting for a reply from PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

Meanwhile, the Advisory Committee of the Parliament to oversee the preparations for Golden Jubilee celebrations of the 1973 Constitution, in its 4th meeting held in Islamabad today with Convener of the Committee, Senator Mian Raza Rabbani approved media strategy for the celebrations.

Minister for Information , Marriyum Aurangzeb, while sharing details of the media strategy to cover the commemoration, said that all departments of the ministry including PTV, Radio Pakistan, DEMP, PID, EP Wing, PEMRA has planned certain activities related to the celebrations.

PM reaffirms govt’s resolve to put Pakistan on road to development, prosperity

Islamabad, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has said the incumbent coalition government is making all out efforts to bring the economy out of prevailing quagmire and put the country ahead on path of development and prosperity.

Talking to a delegation of Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors in Islamabad on Wednesday, he said the fears of default have ended now due to prudent policies of the government implemented during its eleven months’ rule.

About ongoing talks with International Monetary Fund, the Prime Minister expressed the confidence that agreement with the IMF will be inked very soon.

He said the government has to accept the tough conditions of the IMF due to the previous government’s agreement.

He said the present government is cognizant of the sufferings of common people due to prevailing situation, emerged due to acceptance of the strict conditions by the previous government.

The Prime Minister lauded the role of all the coalition partners for running the government’s affairs effectively saying that the government is united and moving ahead to bring the country out of present situation.

The Prime Minister said the government has taken a number of steps with consensus of all the coalition partners to address sufferings of the common man and for development of the country.

He said we are launching a programme of free distribution of wheat flour among the deserving people across the country during the holy month of Ramadan.

Shehbaz Sharif said the government while utilizing its own funds spent 100 billion rupees to help flood affectees people transparently under Benazir Income Support Programme through National Disaster Management Authority.

He said the government also organized donors’ conference for flood victims in Geneva and succeeded to muster international support for the flood hit people.

He said the government is also standing shoulder to shoulder with the quake-affected people of Turkiye and Syria and has already sent relief goods to help the victims.

About elections in the country, the Prime Minister said holding election within stipulated timeframe is constitutional requirement and the government is fulfilling its responsibilities in this regard.

He said under the decision of Council of Common Interests, the government is holding census and all required funds have also been provided in this connection despite financial constraints.

He said some provinces have expressed their reservations on procedure of census and the government will remove these reservations to hold elections in August or September.

Shehbaz Sharif said being President of PML-N, he has already directed the party to start procedure for submission of nomination papers for elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Prime Minister said the Election Commission of Pakistan is the sole institution to hold the elections and the government will implement its decisions.

About Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, the Prime Minister said it is for the first time in the history of Pakistan that a politician is defying the courts and their orders and even considers himself as a superior than the constitution and law.

He said Imran Khan is attacking judiciary and judges and creating unrest in the country.

Shehbaz Sharif said being President of PML-N, he will continue to play his role to save the state.

Responding to a question about political consultations for sorting out national issues, the Prime Minister said dialogue and negotiations is the only way forward and we have tried to invite PTI for talks, but they always escape talks.

About the elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he said the decision to hold elections there is up to the Election Commission and government will implement whatever decision is taken by the Commission.

Answering yet another question regarding former US Special Representative on Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad’s statement, Shehbaz Sharif said it would have been better if he had also raised voice on the political vendetta against the opposition parties during PTI regime.
