Administrator expresses concern over increase in blood diseases

Karachi, August 16, 2012 (PPI-OT): KMC Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said that the number of children suffering with thalassemia has crossed 1.5 Lac mark and the increase in blood diseases reaching alarming proportion.

He expressed these views while speaking in a gift distribution ceremony for children with thalassemia held in the Al-Mustafa Medical Center. The Al-Mustafa Welfare Society Patron in Chief Haji Hanif Tayyab, Haji Hanif Jano, General Secretary Haji Abdul Ghani Salman and other office bearers and members were also present on this occasion. Administrator Karachi said about seven percent people in Pakistan had so far been reported to have thalassemia and hemophilia.

They could also have normal life and live up to 50 or 60 years if provided with timely and proper treatment of these diseases. He praised the role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in providing free of cost blood to the needy and poor people. Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said cousin marriages were considered main reason behind this and the parents have to suffer with acute pain if no proper treatment of thalassemia or hemophilia children was available in the city.

He said to save the next generation from these disease it was necessary to go through the hemoglobin electro processes test before marriage. KMC will soon begin this test in its hospitals whereas measures were being taken to ensure providing blood to KMC run hospitals.

He further said KMC was spending millions of rupees each month on the health care facilities being provided to citizens of Karachi and a huge sum was allocated in this head for the current financial year. Former federal minister and the patron in chief of Al-Mustafa Welfare Society Haji Hanif Tayyab said Al-Mustafa Medical Center provides proper treatment to the children suffered with thalassemia. About fifty children were admitted in the center and the other fifty were in waiting list.

He said the blood bank in this center was being up graded to provide clean and healthy blood to patient. He saluted the parents of children with thalassemia and said that it was our duty to help and support them. Haji Abdul Ghani, Hanif Jano, Abdul Ghani Suleman and others also spoke on this occasion. In the end children suffered with thalassemia were given gifts.
