AIMPLB Criticizes Waqf Amendment Bill and Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand

New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and other religious organizations have expressed strong disapproval of the Joint Parliamentary Committee’s approval of the Waqf Amendment Bill and the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, leaders of the AIMPLB argued that the committee’s actions violated democratic and ethical principles, infringing on rights granted to Muslims by the Indian Constitution. They highlighted that the committee disregarded the sentiments and opinions of millions of Muslims and dismissed proposals from opposition members, resulting in the passage of a contentious bill. The leaders labeled the bill’s approval as inappropriate and undemocratic, equating it to a deprivation of Muslim rights.

The leaders also criticized the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand, describing it as undemocratic and unconstitutional. They contended that the law conflicts with the fundamental rights of citizens and is unacceptable to Muslims. They emphasized that the Indian Constitution safeguards the freedom of all citizens to practice their religious beliefs, with Muslim Personal Law being an integral part of Islam under the Shariat Application Act of 1937. The leaders asserted that imposing a Uniform Civil Code exceeds the jurisdiction of any state.

The AIMPLB and associated Muslim organizations have opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill, urging the Indian government not to interfere with Waqf properties. They cautioned the government against testing the patience of Muslims and steering the nation away from democracy. The leaders called on the Modi government to retract the amendment bill, warning of potential protests if their demands remain unmet.
