Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani addresses faculty and participants of 2014 National War College

Islamabad, April 18, 2014 (PPI-OT): Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani addressed the faculty and participants of 2014 National War College. Speaking on the occasion Ambassador Jilani briefed the audience on developments in Pakistan and the region. He also dilated upon the status of Pakistan-US bilateral relations.

On arrival, Ambassador Jilani was received by the President of National Defence University Major Gen Greg Martin, Commandant of National War College, Brig Tom Cosentino and senior faculty members of the War College.

In his remarks, Ambassador Jilani highlighted the social transformation taking place in Pakistan due to successful democratic transition, independent media, a vibrant civil society and an active Judiciary. The Ambassador elucidated the government’s priorities in addressing critical issues such as energy, fiscal stability, economic governance and education.

Ambassador stated that the fight against terrorism continues to be a top priority for Pakistan. He explained that through a consultative inter-agency process, Pakistan was putting in place necessary legal and institutional mechanisms to improve internal security. Development of a National Security policy, establishment of a rapid response force and putting in place necessary laws were clear manifestations of the importance attached by Pakistan to deal with the threat from terrorism, he illustrated.

Speaking on the positive trajectory of Pakistan US-bilateral relations, the Ambassador identified a number of areas where US assistance has materially benefited Pakistan and has led to positive public appreciation. He expressed satisfaction that following Prime Minister’s visit to Washington DC in October 2013 and resumption of Strategic Dialogue; both sides have successfully expended on the convergences in the bilateral partnership.

Ambassador’s address was followed by a stimulating inter-active session. Responding to questions on Pakistan’s relations with its neighbours, the Ambassador articulated that Pakistan has made sincere overtures to its neighbours with a view to resolve outstanding issues and achieve enduring peace and prosperity in the region.

Elaborating further, Ambassador informed the audience that the government of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has made constructive proposals aimed at addressing issues through negotiations and to allay each other’s concerns over terrorism. The ambassador noted that terrorism was as much a concern to Pakistan as it is for India.

On another question regarding political transition in Afghanistan, Ambassador remarked that Pakistan has contributed to the conduct of peaceful afghan election and will positively engage with the new government in Afghanistan. The audience included a diverse mix of participants from US Inter-Agency, foreign government representatives undergoing training at National War College and International fellows.
