Analyst Criticizes India’s Unilateral Suspension of Indus Water Treaty

Islamabad: Dr. A Z Hilali, an expert in international relations, has criticized India for its unilateral suspension of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT). The treaty, which has been in place for decades and adhered to by both India and Pakistan, is now under dispute due to India’s actions.

According to Radio Pakistan, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague has previously ruled, in a separate case involving Romania and Yugoslavia, that no mutual or bilateral treaty can be unilaterally suspended if it has been upheld by both parties over time. Dr. Hilali argues that this precedent applies to the IWT, making India’s suspension of the treaty a violation of international norms. Pakistan has responded by bringing the issue to the United Nations, claiming that India’s actions represent a grave violation of international values and laws.
