Islamabad: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu Kashmir chapter has strongly challenged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent assertions of “normalcy” in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), following his visit to the region earlier this week.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, APHC-AJK emphasized that despite Modi’s assurances of peace and progress, the actual situation remains unchanged. The territory is heavily militarized, with nearly 900,000 armed personnel present, marking it as one of the most militarized zones globally.
The group pointed out the extensive security measures and lockdown-like restrictions imposed during Modi’s visit, which disrupted daily life, contradicting his claims of normalcy.
Severe human rights violations persist in the region, including arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, and custodial torture, especially after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
The economic landscape in Jammu and Kashmir remains dire, marked by high unemployment rates, particularly among the youth, and struggling industries such as tourism. Moreover, frequent internet shutdowns and harassment of journalists further challenge the narrative of progress.
APHC has called for a reduction in militarization, the restoration of democratic rights, and dialogue with all stakeholders to address and resolve the Kashmir issue comprehensively.
