Karachi, June 26, 2023 (PPI-OT): An Awareness / Training session on Protection and Registration of Geographical Indications was jointly organized by IPO-Pakistan and Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in Lahore, today. The purpose of the activity was to sensitize the business community about wise use of GI system as Authorized Users to get maximum economic benefits from the system.
Mr. Kashif Anwar, President, LCCI during his inaugural address informed that LCCI is in close collaboration with IPO-Pakistan since its inception in 2005 to protect IP rights of the business community by registration of their Trademarks, Copyrights, Patents, Designs and other IPRs with IPO-Pakistan. He further said that today’s session will provide an opportunity to SMEs, Start-ups and local entrepreneurs to get economic benefits by using Geographical Indications Protection system for their area specific products.
Mr. Muhammad Ismail, Director (GI), IPO-Pakistan during his presentation informed that Geographical Indications (Protection and registration) Act of Pakistan was enacted in March, 2020. Rules thereunder were notified in December, 2020. Federal Government has notified 65 GIs. Out of these 65 GIs, 6 have been registered by IPO-Pakistan i.e. Basmati rice, Pink Rock Salt, Hyderabad, Bangles, Sargodha Kinnow, Chaunsa Mango and Sindhri Mango. He further said that the GI protection system plays an important role in the economic uplifting of local communities, trade development and export promotion. GI has the potential to contribute to the economic development of small businesses and local communities.
GI is an instrument for the development of national economy. Besides offering excellent marketing opportunities and premium price at international markets, GIs are also a source of tourism development in the area of production. A number of participants from business community, lawyers’ forum, public and private bodies participated in this Session.
