Eid-ul-Fitr Observance in Jammu and Kashmir Amid Absence of Official Holiday

Srinagar, Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir In a controversial move, the government did not declare an official holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, leading to dissatisfaction among the local population who observed the festival in sync with Pakistan. This decision has sparked criticism and highlighted the ongoing cultural and religious solidarity between the residents of Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan.

According to Kashmir Media Service, for the first time, employees in the region were required to attend work on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, diverging from the practice in the rest of India, where the festival will be celebrated a day later. This situation arose after local religious leaders, including Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, aligned the region’s Eid celebrations with Pakistan’s Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee’s moon sighting announcement.

The lack of a formal holiday on Eid in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir this year has underscored the region’s unique socio-political and religious dynamics, particularly its connection with Pakistan’s cultural and religious calendar.
