Civil Society in Jammu and Kashmir Condemns Unlawful Detentions and Fabricated Charges

Srinagar: Civil society activists in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir have expressed serious concerns over the increasing trend of unlawful detentions and fabricated cases against Kashmiris, which they describe as an attempt by New Delhi to stifle political dissent.

According to Kashmir Media Service, activists pointed to recent incidents, including the detention of two Kashmiri women under the Public Safety Act (PSA) on charges of supporting the pro-freedom movement. They argue that these actions reflect the Indian authorities’ attempts to suppress the legitimate struggle for self-determination.

Following the revocation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, over 25,525 Kashmiris have been detained, with more than 172,464 arrests recorded over the past 35 years. Civil society groups have labeled these mass arrests and the association of the Kashmir freedom movement with terrorism as violations of international laws, including the Geneva Conventions concerning prisoners’ rights.

Activists have criticized India’s use of investigative agencies to undermine the Kashmiri struggle and emphasized that such efforts are destined to fail. They called on global human rights organizations to take immediate action against the unlawful detentions and hold India accountable for its violations of international norms.

“The resilience and courage of the Kashmiri people will ultimately triumph against Indian oppression,” the activists stated, reaffirming their commitment to the region’s struggle for freedom and justice.
