Islamabad: On World Food Day, Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, stressed the importance of adopting climate-resilient farming practices to secure global food supplies amid escalating climate challenges. Addressing the vulnerabilities faced by agriculture due to changing weather patterns, Alam called for immediate action to transform agricultural techniques to support sustainable growth and ensure food availability.
According to Press Information Department, Alam detailed how climate change, with its higher temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather, poses significant risks to agricultural productivity, particularly in climate-vulnerable regions like Pakistan. Such conditions exacerbate food insecurity and elevate poverty levels, particularly affecting marginalized communities.
Alam advocated for adaptive agricultural strategies such as crop rotation and the use of drought-resistant crop varieties to bolster resilience against climate variability. She emphasized the dual benefits of these practices in enhancing carbon sequestration and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change on farming.
Highlighting the disproportionate impact of climate change on marginalized groups, including women and low-income farmers, Alam called for targeted interventions to bridge the gap in resource access and knowledge. She underscored the role of diverse cropping systems in improving ecological performance, soil health, and biodiversity, which are crucial for sustaining food security in the face of climate adversity.
The coordinator’s message was a call to action for policymakers, communities, and international partners to collaborate in fostering sustainable food systems that are robust enough to withstand climate impacts while providing sufficient nutrition for all.
