Islamabad, Dr. Kabir Ahmed Sidhu, Chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), addressed the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) urging the business community to aid the CCP’s efforts to combat cartelization and anti-competitive behaviors in various sectors.
According to Competition Commission of Pakistan, the advocacy session on Competition Law, hosted by ICCI, was aimed at reinforcing the importance of maintaining free and fair competition within the market. Dr. Sidhu highlighted the CCP’s role in preventing market abuses and fostering good governance, stressing the chambers of commerce’s crucial role in whistleblowing activities to expose cartels. The session also noted the CCP’s recent actions, including imposing PKR 74 billion in penalties across sectors such as sugar, wheat, poultry, cement, automobile, and telecom, with several major cases still pending in the apex court.
Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari, President of the ICCI, emphasized the necessity of a level playing field for all business entities and praised the CCP’s rigorous actions against cartels, acknowledging their impact on both business operations and consumer benefits. Bakhtawari confirmed ICCI’s support for the CCP’s objectives, recognizing their vital contribution to economic growth and market fairness. Additionally, CCP Member Salman Amin discussed the importance of advocacy and training in ensuring sustainable compliance and corrective behaviors in the corporate sector.
