Concert aimed at promoting unreal image of peaceful Kashmir

Srinagar, September 06, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, human rights activist and spokesman for the organizing committee of a parallel music show ‘Haqeeqat-e-Kashmir’, Khurram Parvez has said that the purpose of Zubin Mehta concert is to show an unreal image of a peaceful and normal Kashmir. Khurram Parvez addressing a news conference in Srinagar said that legitimising Indian occupation over Kashmir by using a musical concert was completely unacceptable. “It is deeply political event for a political purpose”, he added.

He said the residents of Shalimar are under surveillance of oppressive state apparatus and the invitees to the concert have been verified by the intelligence agencies. He said that the German Ambassador was misleading people by calling the Zubin show as an event for people of Kashmir.

Khurram Pervez made it clear that they were not against the music but against using music as propaganda machinery. “We also have historically cultivated a sublime tradition in and love for music. However, legitimising an occupation via a musical concert is completely unacceptable,” he said.

He appealed all sections of Kashmir society to join the “Haqeeqat-e-Kashmir” event to express their solidarity with the resilience and suffering of people of Kashmir.

Professor Hameedah Nayeem, one of the members of organising committee, said that they were not against music but the Government of India would project the event as a symbol of normalcy in Kashmir, which is far from reality. “The concert revolves round the politics of exclusion, where false impressions are being created,” she said.

Opposing the Zubin show, a noted satirist and poet Zareef Ahmad Zareef said: “The day Kashmir dispute will be resolved, we would invite him and others to perform for us and celebrate.”
