Faceless Customs System Praised for Streamlining Trade Operations

KARACHI: The President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, has commended the Faceless Customs Assessment (FCA) system, urging for its continued implementation and expansion across Pakistan. He stated that the system has significantly benefited compliant importers and exporters by making trade processes more efficient and transparent.

Bilwani highlighted the FCA system, initiated by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Pakistan Customs in Karachi, as a model reform that has reduced corruption and enhanced transparency in customs assessment. The system leverages Information Technology (IT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to minimize physical interactions, streamlining operations and boosting confidence among genuine traders.

The introduction of the FCA has improved customs efficiency by expediting clearance times and simplifying documentation. Businesses now experience faster processing and fewer delays, reducing their reliance on clearing agents and discretionary powers, which in turn lowers the cost of doing business.

He emphasized that one of the system’s major achievements is the near-elimination of physical visits to Customs House, saving time and reducing opportunities for malpractice. This has allowed legitimate businesses to operate in a more secure environment.

Bilwani advocated for the swift nationwide implementation of the FCA system, noting the success of its rollout in Karachi as proof of its effectiveness. He urged the government to adopt similar IT and AI-driven systems in other trade-related departments to root out corruption and inefficiency.

The KCCI President also called for the full digitization of trade processes to enhance transparency and speed. He praised Karachi’s Customs officials for their dedication to the FCA system’s success and reiterated KCCI’s support for initiatives that simplify trade and promote fair business practices.

Bilwani concluded by emphasizing the importance of technology in modernizing Pakistan’s trade infrastructure, stating that the FCA system is a significant move towards empowering honest entrepreneurs and exposing dishonest practices.
