Family of slain civilian says their son was killed in custody

Srinagar, May 18, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the family of a civilian, Ishtiaq Ahmad Wani, who was killed during a cordon and search operation in Hendew area of Shopian, has said that their son was shot dead by Indian troops in custody. Ishtiaq Ahmad Wani, 24, was killed by the troops during a cordon and search operation in Hendew on Thursday.

Ishtiaq as per the family was a simple farmer and was arrested first and then killed in cold blood. Abdul Dawood Wani, father of the slain youth, said that his son went to the orchard and brought fodder from there. He said that Ishtiaq then went again to bring more but on way he was caught by the Indian troops and was killed when they were about to leave the area. He said that Ishtiaq was married four years back and was the lone bread earner for the family including the elderly parents.

Wani said that on Thursday, Ishtiyaq had earlier been summoned by the Indian police. “They (police) called me on phone and told me to send my son there and I did the same. On return, he went to orchard but didn’t come back,” he said.

Local sources said that Ishtiaq become the first civilian casualty of Indian troops’ operations this year in Shopian district. At least 24 civilians were killed by the troops in the district during cordon and search operations and by opening fire on protesters in 2018.
