Lahore: In a significant move to bolster Pakistan’s customs operations through advanced technology, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has partnered with Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). The collaboration focuses on integrating machine learning and data analytics into customs procedures to streamline cross-border trade and enhance compliance measures.
According to Federal Board of Revenue, the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed at the FBR headquarters by Mr. Muhammad Junaid Jalil Khan, Member Customs (Operations) for FBR, and Dr. Muhammad Fareed Zaffar, Director of the Technology for People Initiative (TPI) at LUMS. The ceremony was attended by FBR Chairman Mr. Rashid Mahmood Langrial, alongside senior officials from both institutions.
This partnership is set to improve the Customs Risk Management System, aiming to reduce human intervention in customs processes while increasing the accuracy of regulatory compliance and revenue collection. One of the key projects under this MoU is the development of the National Targeting Centre (NTC), which will utilize information and communication technology to profile and target entities involved in the illicit movement of goods.
Chairman Langrial underscored the importance of such collaborations between public sector organizations and academic institutions in fostering innovation and developing local solutions. The TPI at LUMS, known for its contributions to public sector technology solutions on a pro-bono basis, is expected to bring a wealth of experience in machine learning and data analytics to the table.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote research and evidence-based policy making in Pakistan, enhancing transparency and accountability through open access to data and research. The collaboration is poised to transform how Pakistan Customs operates, setting a precedent for future public-academic partnerships.
