Islamabad: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, chaired a pivotal meeting of a Prime Ministerial committee on Thursday to deliberate on a governance model for Islamabad. The meeting included key political and bureaucratic stakeholders, where Iqbal underscored the critical need for establishing a permanent legislative body in the capital to enhance its legislative framework and governance.

According to Press Information Department, during the committee session, Iqbal outlined the challenges faced by Islamabad, particularly emphasizing the absence of a dedicated legislative body as a core issue hindering effective city management. He proposed the creation of either a provincial assembly or a similar council tailored to address Islamabad’s unique administrative demands. The minister also highlighted the necessity for a defined administrative authority and a structured waste management system to address suburban needs. He stressed the importance of having a governance model that ensures continuity and stability, regardless of federal government changes, aiming for a resilient institutional mechanism to facilitate consistent operations and enhance transparency and accountability in city administration.
