Islamabad: A high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Qaisar Ahmed Shaikh, was convened to deliberate on the impact of increased port charges at Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and their effect on business costs. The session included representatives from government bodies, business chambers, and port operators to explore solutions for alleviating financial pressures on businesses.
According to a statement by Press Information Department, Minister Shaikh addressed the concerns of various industries about the escalating port charges at KPT. He stressed the necessity of cost-effective port operations to boost Pakistan’s trade competitiveness. “The government is dedicated to resolving these challenges and fostering a business-friendly environment conducive to trade and economic growth,” said Shaikh.
Participants in the meeting emphasized the detrimental impact of increased port charges on operational expenses, affecting the pricing of imported goods and the competitiveness of exports. Discussions centered on revising port tariffs to meet regional standards, enhancing efficiency to minimize delays and costs, and utilizing technology to optimize port operations.
The Federal Minister instructed Karachi Port Trust and other stakeholders to devise a comprehensive plan to rationalize port charges while maintaining quality services. He also announced the creation of a working group to monitor progress and address business concerns effectively. The meeting concluded with all parties agreeing to maintain close collaboration to promptly resolve the issues and bolster Pakistan’s trade and economic framework.
