Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, chaired the inaugural meeting of the Board of Governors of the National Seed Development and Regulatory Authority (NSDRA). The meeting concentrated on setting up the authority’s operations to bolster Pakistan’s seed sector.
According to a statement by Press Information Department, the operationalization of NSDRA follows the enactment of the Seed Amendment Act, 2024. This legislation emphasizes the need to tackle challenges within the seed sector. NSDRA’s mandate includes formulating policies, regulating the seed industry, and advising the federal government on enhancing seed standards.
During the meeting, Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain underscored the importance of quality seeds for food security and agricultural productivity. He stressed the necessity of advanced seeds for self-sufficiency and export growth. The provinces’ proposal for increased representation within NSDRA was acknowledged and appreciated by the minister.
Discussions during the session also covered NSDRA’s administrative structure, vision, and strategic objectives. The authority aims to foster a competitive seed sector that encourages innovation, boosts investment, and ensures the availability of technologically advanced seeds.
NSDRA’s strategic goals include improving seed quality, reducing imports, increasing exports, and enhancing farmers’ incomes. Key focus areas will be germplasm development, modern technology adoption, strengthening the seed supply chain, and implementing a robust regulatory framework.
The National Seed Policy has been finalized, enabling NSDRA to support provincial initiatives comprehensively. Concluding the meeting, Minister Hussain reiterated the ministry’s commitment to fortifying Pakistan’s seed sector and its contribution to national agricultural development.
