Federal Minister Urges Financial Overhaul for Pakistan Postal Service

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Communications, Privatization, and Board of Investment, Abdul Aleem Khan, has raised significant concerns about the current state of the Pakistan Postal Service, assigning a one-week deadline for developing a plan to improve its financial discipline. During a meeting of the Focal Group for Communications, Mr. Khan noted that the postal service’s performance fails to meet necessary standards and emphasized the urgent need for an emergency financial strategy.

According to Press Information Department, Mr. Khan instructed the Federal Secretary of Communications to devise a comprehensive plan addressing these issues, with a report to be submitted at the next meeting. He stressed the importance of establishing NADRA and Passport Counters in all GPOs and post offices nationwide as a means to boost revenue. The minister expressed that the department must at least break even and cover its own costs, suggesting that adopting modern practices and reducing government expenses could lead to self-reliance.

Mr. Khan highlighted the necessity for the Pakistan Postal Service to generate its own resources and not depend on government funding, proposing options such as renting out its buildings. He called for a coherent policy to serve as a roadmap for the institution and demanded a detailed report with concrete proposals to increase revenue. The minister also addressed the need for eliminating vacant positions and achieving financial targets, as senior officers presented various issues during the meeting.
