Islamabad: The government is actively pursuing measures to lower electricity prices and address circular debt, according to Power Minister Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari. Speaking at the Pakistan Business Council’s Dialogue on the Economy, Leghari outlined several initiatives aimed at reforming the nation’s energy sector.
According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Leghari emphasized the need for new agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as the current pricing system is unsustainable. The government plans to negotiate revised contracts with IPPs, with service level agreements already prepared.
Leghari announced that industrial states and economic zones will soon manage their own power distribution systems. The government is planning to privatize the power distribution network, allowing consumers and companies to independently engage in electricity transactions.
The minister also highlighted efforts to reduce electricity taxes on the general public and introduced the National Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy. This policy aims to foster the adoption of electric vehicles by offering lower electricity rates at charging stations.
Additionally, Leghari mentioned that Chinese-operated coal-fired plants will transition to using locally sourced coal from the Thar region, reducing reliance on imports and cutting down associated costs.
