Lahore: Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider has acknowledged the significant role played by the business community in Pakistan’s economic development. Speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), he highlighted the community’s dedication during challenging times, which has been crucial in sustaining the national economy.
According to a statement by Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Governor Haider assured that concerns regarding high electricity and gas tariffs, alongside supply shortages, would be communicated to President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He emphasized the federal government’s focus on reducing energy costs and enhancing business conditions.
Governor Haider noted that despite a challenging business environment, the sector has remained committed to the nation’s development. He acknowledged the excessive tax burden on businesses and stressed the necessity for a revision, indicating that business consultations would be included in budget planning.
LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad expressed optimism about the ‘Uraan Pakistan’ initiative, led by the Prime Minister, as a potential milestone for economic stabilization and development. They pointed to issues such as devaluation, high tariffs, and excessive taxation, which pose challenges for businesses. They also emphasized the need for affordable energy to foster industrial growth and enhance exports.
SAARC Chamber Vice President Mian Anjum Nisar commended Governor Haider’s pro-business approach and stressed the urgency of lowering business costs to improve competitiveness and boost exports. Former LCCI President Muhammad Ali Mian proposed a meeting of all chambers and business associations to discuss federal budget proposals under the Governor’s chairmanship.
