India Among Top Five Countries with Highest Poverty Levels, UN Report Reveals

New York: India ranks among the top five countries with the highest number of people living below the poverty line, with an estimated 234 million individuals enduring extreme poverty,.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the report is part of the latest update of the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) at the University of Oxford. It highlights a global crisis, revealing that 1.1 billion people worldwide are living in acute poverty, with over half of them being children.

The findings emphasize that approximately 40 percent of those living in poverty are in conflict-affected nations, with around 455 million of the world’s poor residing in areas impacted by violence. This ongoing conflict has hindered or reversed progress in poverty reduction efforts.

Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, called for immediate action to address this growing issue, stressing the need for increased resources and development initiatives aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty, especially in areas plagued by conflict.

The report highlights that children are particularly vulnerable, with 27.9 percent of children living in poverty, compared to 13.5 percent of adults. Furthermore, 218 million individuals reside in war-torn regions, illustrating the direct link between conflict and poverty.

Based on data from 112 countries, the MPI report, covering 6.3 billion people, emphasizes the importance of understanding the relationship between conflict and poverty. Over the past decade, the global MPI has been assessed to ensure comparability in poverty trends.

The UN report concludes by calling for concerted efforts to address the root causes of poverty and provide immediate support to vulnerable populations, particularly those living in conflict zones.
