Jammu: The BJP-led Indian government has initiated the formation of 19 special police units across eight districts of the Jammu division in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), marking a significant escalation in the region’s militarization efforts.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the establishment of these units is perceived as a strategic move to suppress any form of resistance advocating for the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination, as recognized by the United Nations. Modeled after the Special Operations Group (SOG), these units are notorious for their harsh tactics and are now positioned in key areas across the region.
The new units are stationed in strategic locations including Malhar and Bani in Kathua district; Pouni-Ransoo, Mahore, Chassana, and Gulabgarh in Reasi district; and several other critical points across the Jammu division. Each unit will be led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), with immediate postings of 19 DySPs to oversee operations.
This development is part of a broader pattern of intensifying military and police presence in IIOJK, which is already noted as one of the world’s most militarized zones. The introduction of these units underscores the Indian government’s continued efforts to consolidate control over the region by curbing dissent and quelling the local population’s aspirations for self-determination.
