India-Pakistan to Fast Track the Opening of Bank Branches

Mumbai: Dr. Subir Vithal Gokaran, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India called on Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Snr. Federal Minister for Commerce, who is currently on an official visit to India, to discuss the opening of bank branches in India and Pakistan on reciprocal basis.

Minister Commerce stressed that both the countries should fast track the process of opening of branches to facilitate the business community and to increase the trade volume between the two countries. Dr. Gokaran expressed his optimism and agreed for increased cooperation between the two regulators.

It is also expected that a high-level delegation of RBI will visit Pakistan in the first half of October 2011 to discuss the modalities for opening of branches. Secretary Commerce, CE TDAP, Pakistan High Commissioner to India and a representative of State Bank of Pakistan were also present in the meeting.
