Indian Rupee Hits Historic Low, Sparking Criticism from Opposition

New Delhi: The Indian rupee plummeted to an all-time low of INR 86.59 against the U.S. dollar, inciting sharp criticism from opposition leaders who accused the Narendra Modi-led government of economic mismanagement and incompetence.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh took to social media to highlight the rupee’s decline since Modi assumed office in 2014. Ramesh remarked on the rupee’s value when Modi was elected, contrasting it with its current state, and questioned who should be held accountable for the currency’s depreciation.

CPI general secretary D. Raja expressed concern over India’s increasing foreign debt, which now exceeds INR 200 lakh crore. He questioned the government’s economic promises, recalling Modi’s previous statements equating the rupee’s value to national honor.

Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the government’s silence on the issue, demanding answers from the Prime Minister. She questioned why the Indian rupee is the only currency falling against the dollar, urging transparency and accountability.

Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale also criticized the government’s economic policies, attributing the rupee’s fall to deeper systemic issues. He noted the current economic challenges, including low growth, high inflation, and rising crude oil prices, and accused the government of being in denial.
