New Delhi: The Indian Supreme Court has mandated the creation of a National Task Force (NTF) to enhance security measures for healthcare professionals following the brutal rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, an incident that has ignited widespread protests and strikes across the country.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the horrific discovery of the 31-year-old doctor’s bloodied body on August 9 at a state-run hospital sparked outrage and a national conversation on violence against healthcare workers and women. This led to the mobilization of doctors’ associations, which have halted non-essential services at numerous government hospitals.
The court, shocked by the brutality of the assault, underscored the urgent need for better protection within healthcare settings. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, announcing the order, emphasized the necessity of a cohesive strategy to prevent such violence, proposing an enforceable national protocol to ensure safe working conditions for healthcare staff.
