Japanese envoy attend National Forum on Girls’ Education in Pakistan

Islamabad, February 07, 2014 (PPI-OT): H. E. Mr. Hiroshi Inomata, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, attended the National Forum on Girls’ Education in Pakistan, which was co-hosted by UNESCO and the Ministry of Education, Trainings and Standards in Higher Education. The Forum was attended by H.E. Muhammad Baligh-ur-Rehman, Minister of State for Education, Trainings and Standards in Higher Education, Ms Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO and other prominent guests.

In his speech, Ambassador Inomata stated that the Government of Japan has always been committed to promoting girls’ education and women’s social participation. He referred to the speech delivered by Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo Abe at the United Nations General Assembly last September, in which Prime Minister emphasized the importance of bringing about “a society in which women shine.”

Ambassador Inomata also gave an overview of Japan’s endeavour to promote girls’ education and women’s social participation in Pakistan. Japan is preparing with the Government of Pakistan for a project to upgrade around 30 primary girls into elementary schools in Southern rural Sindh. Japan has also been active in promoting non-formal education in Pakistan; it has provided educational opportunities to 180,000 people, about 70% of which are women, who missed education at school.

Moreover, with a grant and technical assistance from Japan, the Government College of Technology Railway Road in Lahore became the first public-sector Diploma institute in Punjab which accepted female students in the field of architecture. Japan has also been partnering with UN agencies and NGOs to promote gender equity.

Ambassador Inomata reaffirmed that Japan will continue to make every effort to enhance girls’ education and women’s social participation in Pakistan.
