JI IOK activist killed in NIA’s custody in IOK

Srinagar, March 19, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, a Jamaat-e-Islami activist and school principal was tortured to death in the custody of the India’s National Investigating Agency in Srinagar during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Jamaat activist identified as Rizwan Asad, who was arrested by the sleuths of National Investigation Agency from Awantipora area of Pulwama district, three days ago, was killed at the infamous Indian torture center, Cargo camp, which is run by the Special Operations Group. Asad, an M.Phil in organic chemistry, was a principal at a private school in Awantipora, Pulwama district.

The custodial killing triggered forceful anti-India protests in different areas of the territory including Pulwama and Srinagar districts. Students of Kashmir University in Srinagar also held forceful demonstrations against the custodial death of the school principal and the summoning of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by NIA. Thousands of people thronged the residence of the martyred youth soon after the news about his death reached his Awantipora hometown. Several people were injured when troops fired bullets, pellets and teargas shells on the mourners in the area.

Spontaneous shutdown was observed in Srinagar, Pulwama and other areas of the territory against the Asad’s killing in NIA custody. The authorities suspended Internet and mobile phone services in Pulwama district.

The Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik while condemning the killing of Rizwan Asad in a statement issued in Srinagar, today, called for a complete shutdown across the territory, tomorrow. The leadership termed it as India’s daydreaming to trample a people’s resistance by using its agencies like National Investigation Agency and Enforcement Directorate. Unidentified gunmen killed a 25-year-old labourer outside his home at Reshipora in Awantipora area in Pulwama district.

The APHC AJK chapter at a meeting in Islamabad, today, urged the international community to take notice of the Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir. The meeting was presided over by the APHC-AJK Convener, Syed Abdullah Gilani. The participants denounced the custodial killing of Rizwan Asad in occupied Kashmir.

Meanwhile, speakers at a conference in Luton, UK, while condemning the Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir said that the prevailing tension between Pakistan and India over the unresolved Kashmir dispute had brought the two nuclear-armed countries to the brink of war. The conference was organized by Alex Mayer, a British Member of the European Parliament, and addressed by MEP Wajid Khan, British mayors, councillors and representatives of the Kashmir community.
