London, July 04, 2014 (PPI-OT): The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leaders held a protest sit-in outside the Indian High Commission in London. Diplomatic Bureau Chief of JKLF, Professor Zaffar Khan, led the sit-in while party leaders, Mahmood Hussain, Professor Liaqat Khan, Javed Rashid and Mahmood Faiz accompanied him.
The sit-in was organized as a show of solidarity with JKLF’s ‘Quit Kashmir’ movement which the party Chairman, Yasin Malik, initiated on June 23, 2014.
Later, a memorandum presented to the Indian High Commission reminded Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, that any attempt by his government to further dilute the social, cultural and political character of Jammu and Kashmir would be met with full popular resistance through the Quit Kashmir campaign both in and outside occupied Kashmir.
The memorandum said that along with Yasin Malik over a hundred leaders of the party throughout occupied Kashmir were arrested and held in custody for over a week. These arrests were made both at the launch of the Quit Kashmir campaign on June 23 as well as through raids carried out by Indian police and troops on the homes of JKLF functionaries, a day earlier.
The memorandum reminded that Muhammad Yasin Malik and his associates were only exercising their basic and fundamental democratic right to freedom of expression and right to peaceful assembly.
The memorandum said that the question of Kashmir’s future status was yet to be determined by millions of Kashmiris through the exercise of their democratic will and as the custodian of popular Kashmiri sentiment, the JKLF and its leadership could not be deterred by any amount of harsh and undemocratic treatment at the hands of Indian government and the JKLF will continue to lead the valiant struggle through the Quit Kashmir campaign.
The memorandum urged the Modi-led Indian government to use its popular mandate and initiate an early process for a just, equitable and lasting settlement of the Kashmir dispute for peace, prosperity and progress in the entire region.
