Justice continues to elude martyred rights activist, lawyer Jaleel Andrabi

Islamabad, March 27, 2023 (PPI-OT): Justice continues to elude family of martyred noted human rights activist and lawyer Jaleel Andrabi despite the passage of 27 years. Jaleel Andrabi was arrested by Indian army’s 35th Rashtriya Rifles Major Avtar Singh on March 8, 1996, and three weeks later, on March 27, 1996, his body was found floating in the Jhelum River near Padshahi Bagh in Srinagar. Jaleel Andrabi was murdered for documenting human rights violations by Indian troops in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and until his death, he remained a vocal critic of the crimes committed by Indian troops in the territory.

Hurriyat leaders and organizations including Ghulam Muhammad Khan Sopori, Yasmeen Raja, Zamoorda Habib, Dr Musaib, Javeed Ahmed Mir and Bar member Adv. GN Shaheen in their statements in Srinagar while eulogizing Jaleel Andrabi’s sacrifices for the Kashmir cause said his gruesome murder remains etched in Kashmiris’ memory and the people of Kashmir could never forget him. The leaders reiterated to continue his mission till freedom of Jammu and Kashmir from tyrannical clutches of India.

Meanwhile, the convener of APHC-AJK chapter, Mehmood Ahmed Saghar, in a statement in Islamabad appealed to international human rights organizations, including the United Nations Human Rights Council, Amnesty International and Asia Watch to take serious notice of the worst violations of human rights by Indian forces in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He also called for justice to the family of Advocate Jaleel Andrabi.
