Karachi: K-Electric’s 560 MW Bin Qasim Power Station II (BQPS-II) has garnered international acclaim, securing accolades at the Asian Power Awards 2024 in two distinct categories: Gas Power Project of the Year – Pakistan and Power Plant Upgrade of the Year – Pakistan. The awards recognize the plant’s infrastructure upgrades that have enhanced its efficiency and reliability, following a USD 4 billion investment across KE’s value chain post-privatization.
According to K-Electric, the modifications made to BQPS-II include enabling the use of RLNG as a secondary fuel and reducing auxiliary load requirements. These changes have led to improved net efficiency and increased operational flexibility, positioning the plant as a model for sustainable and resilient energy solutions in Pakistan. The advancements underscore BQPS-II’s leadership role in the power generation sector, meeting the growing energy demands of Karachi.
The Asian Power Awards are highly esteemed within the energy sector, celebrating organizations that implement innovative and transformative solutions to address increasing energy demands while promoting sustainability. KE’s recognition places it among leading international entities such as Dubai Electric and Water Authority (DEWA) and China Resources Power Holding Company Limited. This achievement highlights KE’s commitment to advanced technological solutions that benefit both customers and the environment.
K-Electric’s focus on embracing cutting-edge technologies is pivotal in modernizing its operations. The company has recently received NEPRA’s decision on its generation tariff petition for the period post-2023, marking a milestone towards its USD 2 billion investment plan until 2030. Additionally, KE successfully concluded competitive bidding for 640 MW of renewable energy projects in Balochistan and Sindh, achieving the lowest tariff bid for renewable energy generation in the country. These projects are part of KE’s Power Acquisition Program, which aims to add 1300 MW of renewable energy to its portfolio, further enhancing sustainability.
Abbas Husain, Chief Generation and Transmission Officer at K-Electric, expressed his pride in the recognition, stating, “It’s an honor to be recognized alongside notable international power sector players. We continue to explore ways to push the envelope of innovation, adapting to ensure reliable and economical power supply to customers. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in power generation and distribution.”
