Pakistan Reaffirms Stance Against New Permanent UNSC Seats.

New York: Pakistan has reiterated its opposition to any proposal for adding new permanent seats to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The country’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram, delivered a statement at the UN General Assembly highlighting that such additions would exacerbate the existing deadlock within the Council.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Akram pointed to the ongoing genocidal war in Gaza as evidence of the Security Council’s repeated failures to respond effectively to international threats. He attributed these failures to the inability of the current permanent members to reach consensus on decisive actions.

Ambassador Akram further argued that the proposal to add 11 to 12 non-permanent members would enhance the representation of small and medium-sized states. This move, he suggested, would help balance the disproportionate influence of the five permanent members, while also ensuring accountability and promoting democratization within the Council.
