Karachi Hosts Major Workshop to Boost Maritime Law Enforcement

Karachi: A pivotal legal workshop aimed at enhancing interagency collaboration for maritime law enforcement is currently underway in Karachi. This initiative, part of the ‘Improved National Response against Drugs and Contraband Trafficking in the Maritime Domain (Phase II)’ project, is designed to bolster Pakistan’s efforts in combating narcotic and contraband trafficking through its maritime channels.

According to United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the workshop is funded by the U.S. Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and involves multiple Pakistani agencies including the Anti-Narcotics Force, Pakistan Customs, Pakistan Coast Guards, and Pakistan Maritime Security Agency. The event was inaugurated by notable figures such as U.S. Deputy Consul General Amy Hood, UNODC Regional Program Coordinator David O’Connell, and PMSA Commander Zeshan Arif, focusing on legal strategies to intercept vessels involved in illegal activities.

David O’Connell emphasized the UNODC’s comprehensive approach in partnership with the Government of Pakistan, aiming to enhance border management and reduce drug trafficking while upholding the rule of law. Deputy Consul General Amy Hood spoke on the complexities of maritime law enforcement and reiterated U.S. support for Pakistan’s maritime security efforts. Commander Arif highlighted Pakistan’s role as a frontline defender against narcotics flowing from Afghanistan and acknowledged the critical support from UNODC and INL in enhancing Pakistan’s capabilities in the maritime sector.
