Karachi: In a significant move to enhance urban infrastructure, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has initiated a major reconstruction project covering 33 key roads in the city, accompanied by an overhaul of the street lighting system. The awarded companies have begun construction with strict orders to adhere to high standards and avoid substandard practices, or face immediate blacklisting.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab confirmed the completion of the tendering and scrutiny process necessary for the project’s initiation. He emphasized that this extensive effort is vital for improving traffic flow and reducing travel times and traffic congestion in Karachi. Noteworthy roads undergoing reconstruction include Habib River Road, Shahrah-e-Orangi, and Madinatul Hikmat Road, with significant repairs also slated for prominent locations like Chandni Chowk and Kamran Chowrangi.
The street lighting upgrades are being carried out at Shah Waliullah Road, Ittehad Town Road, and several other areas, which will enhance safety and visibility. The initiative also includes improvements to the sewage systems on roads like Habib River Road. The Mayor underscored the importance of this project in his vision for a better-structured city, capable of providing durable infrastructure to its citizens.
Mayor Wahab also highlighted the lessons learned from previous experiences in urban development, which have informed the current strategies for infrastructure improvement.
