Karachi Mayor Announces Plan to Clear Drains and Provide Alternatives for Shopkeepers

Karachi: Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has announced a plan to clean the drains around 7000 Road in New Karachi and provide alternative locations for shopkeepers affected by the removal of encroachments on the drains. The initiative will involve the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and seek support from the Sindh Government to identify additional solutions. The plan has received support from the town administration, the deputy commissioner, and members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab made these statements during a meeting focused on addressing encroachments on the drains and cleaning 7000 Road in New Karachi. The meeting included Deputy Commissioner Central Taha Saleem, MQM Pakistan member of the Provincial Assembly Abdul Waseem, Abdul Basit, Chairman of New Karachi Town Muhammad Yousuf, among others.

Mayor Wahab highlighted that residents of New Karachi have faced significant challenges due to drain overflow on 7000 Road, 4000 Road, and 4300 Road, exacerbated by approximately 1,100 illegal constructions over the drains. While some issues were previously resolved with the construction of a drain in Yusuf Goth, this section remains problematic due to encroachments. The plan aims not only to clean the drains but also address these encroachments.

The Mayor emphasized the importance of a strategic approach to resolving these issues while considering the needs of thousands of citizens who traverse the area. He assured that alternative locations would be provided for those whose livelihoods are impacted by the removal of encroachments, ensuring fairness and continuity of business operations.

In the meeting, consensus was reached on providing alternative locations for affected individuals, with a focus on making decisions that align with the broader interests of the city and its residents. Mayor Wahab expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved through collaboration and consultation with all parties involved.
