Karachi Metropolitan Corporation takes control of 12 pedestrian bridges

Karachi, August 23, 2015 (PPI-OT):Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has decided to take control of more than 12 pedestrian bridges which were built on BOT basis under an agreement with private firms, however these firms had been failed to pay around Rs80million to KMC and also did not fulfilled the conditions contained in the agreement.

In a meeting with the officers of Transport and Communication Department, the Administrator Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui gave approval of the seizure of over 12 pedestrian bridges in favor of KMC and the handing over of the control of these bridges along with the bus shelters and tuck shops to the T and C Department with the directive to arrange for the open auction of these facilities.

KMC which presently get nothing from these projects expected revenue of about Rs250million annually from the auction of these projects. During the meeting Administrator Karachi was apprised about the current situation by the senior director transport and communication. He informed him that more than 12 pedestrian bridges had been built by KMC in different areas of the city on BOT basis under an agreement with private firms.

These companies had to arrange for maintenance of these pedestrian bridges and also had to pay some percentage from the advertisement income but they did not fulfilled these conditions and failed to maintain the bridges. Still these firms have to pay dues of a year to one and a half year and they were not responding satisfactorily despite of getting many notices. Taking strict notice of this Administrator Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui instructed T and C department to immediately take control of these bridges and arrange for their open auction.

He said from now on the transport and communication department would have the responsibility of managing these pedestrian bridges, bus shelters and tuck shops and the advertisement on these facilities. He also reiterated his resolve that no one will be allowed to withhold the revenue of KMC and all these dues will be recovered.

He also directed that the auction process should be thoroughly transparent and strictly in accordance with the rules and regulations. Administrator Karachi also instructed T and C department to bring the ready Green buses on roads as soon as possible because the citizens were facing trouble due to shortage of public transport and although it was not the prime responsibility of KMC but it has to play its role to provide convenience to citizens of Karachi.
