Kashmiri Scholar Appeals to Malaysian PM for Support on Self-Determination

Washington: Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, a US-based Kashmiri scholar and head of the World Forum for Peace and Justice, has directed an open letter to Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, urging him to recognize and support the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, similar to the Palestinian cause.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Dr. Fai’s letter commends Prime Minister Anwar for his consistent advocacy for Palestine but criticizes his recent statements that deem Kashmir as solely India’s internal affair. Dr. Fai suggests that these remarks may not align with Anwar’s known understanding of international relations and urges a reevaluation of Malaysia’s stance on Kashmir to align with United Nations mandates.

In his appeal, Dr. Fai reminds the Malaysian leader of the U.N.’s position that the Kashmir issue is primarily about the self-determination of its people, as outlined by several U.N. Security Council resolutions. He implores Prime Minister Anwar to leverage his influence to facilitate a dialogue that respects the aspirations of the Kashmiri people, referencing historical figures like Mahatma Gandhi and recent international concerns about the region’s status and human rights conditions.
