Srinagar, March 23, 2013 (PPI-OT): Kashmiris living in different parts of New Delhi have complained that the Indian police are harassing and intimidating them in the grab of questioning since the recent arrest of a Kashmiri youth in the Indian capital.
“Delhi police raided our room and asked us to accompany them. Even though there were people from Maharashtra, Gujarat and other Indian states present in the room. Police said that they are in search of Kashmiris only. They took us along and thoroughly questioned us. We are really being ill-treated,” a Kashmiri doctor working in a Delhi Hospital told a Srinagar-based news agency over phone.
A Kashmiri youth said that the Kashmiris were directed by the police to come down from the Metro train. “Policemen took all the Kashmiris to a nearby place and thoroughly checked their identity cards. We are being treated like terrorists and we feel humiliated. I was stopped and frisked by police at around six places,” Shabir Ahmed working in a company in Delhi said.
Another Kashmiri youth said that policemen raided residential flats and hotels in and around Jamia Masjid and verified the facts about all the Kashmiris living there. “I along with my friends was taken in a police van and was questioned and our identity cards were checked. It is unfortunate that some of my friends were not having Election Cards and they were repeatedly asked to verify their full identity,” he added.
“Police has the recorded details of every Kashmiri living in Delhi, yet we are being harassed and haunted,” a trader said.
