Washington: Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Chairman of the World Forum for Peace and Justice, highlighted the denial of self-determination and ongoing human rights violations against the people of Jammu and Kashmir in a statement marking the 76th anniversary of the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) resolution.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Dr. Fai criticized India for not fulfilling its obligations under the 1948 UNCIP resolution, which both India and Pakistan originally accepted. This resolution called for a plebiscite to determine the future status of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Fai pointed out India’s historical commitments to the plebiscite, as noted by former US diplomats like Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. and Ambassador Warren Austin, who advocated for determining the will of the Kashmiri people through a democratic process.
Furthermore, Dr. Fai condemned recent Indian policies such as the Domicile Law and the issuance of Domicile Certificates in the region, describing them as violations of international law and UN Security Council resolutions. He called on the United States to lead international efforts to facilitate a fair resolution to the Kashmir dispute, invoking the principles of democracy and human rights that should allow Kashmiris to decide their own future.
The statement from Dr. Fai comes at a critical time, emphasizing the urgency of resolving a conflict that has persisted for over seven decades, impacting not just the region but also influencing US foreign policy.
