Katju urges India to send injured Pakistani prisoner back

Srinagar, May 06, 2013 (PPI-OT): The Chairman of Press Council of India, Markandeya Katju, has appealed to the Indian government to release injured Pakistani prisoner, Sanaullah, on humanitarian ground.

Katju on his blog said, “I appeal to the Indian government to forthwith send back Sanaullah to Pakistan, as requested by the Pakistan government. This will be a humanitarian act.”

He requested the governments of India and Pakistan to immediately set up committees to review cases of all prisoners in either country, and to set up mechanisms for early release of those convicted on alleged confessions or insufficient or suspicious evidence.

Referring to the use of third degree methods particularly used in Indian jails, he said, “Everyone knows how confessions are obtained in our countries.”

Sanaullah, 52, was critically injured after he was attacked by an ex-Indian army man in Jammu’s Kot Bhalwal jail.
