Islamabad, January 21, 2013 (PPI-OT): The leadership of present People’s Government is committed to provide safe, effective, quality and economically affordable drugs and medicine to the general Public. Under this mandate, Ministry of National Regulation and Services, has notified a Policy Board to develop policies/regulations to practically implement the vision of government. First meeting of the Policy Board was held today in the Ministry of NR and S, under the Chairmanship of the Secretary of the Ministry.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the provincial governments and the experts in the fields of pharmaceuticals and alternate medicines systems.

Federal Minister for National Regulations and Services Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan while addressing the Policy Board and media highlighted the commitment accorded by President of Pakistan, Prime Minister of Pakistan, members of National Assembly and Senate, through recently promulgated the Drugs Regulatory Authority of Pakistan Act 2012, reiterated the need for effective regulation.

Madam Minister appreciated all participants of the new policy Board for their active contributions with the note they will prioritize the public will and wishes to avoid any future mishap in the health care delivery system, improvement of services through effective regulations, encourage local investment, enhancement of export of quality medicine under the flagship of Pakistan.

In order to make an effective authority, the Minister highlighted that new disciplines i.e. IT, alternate medicine finance legal and controlled drugs have been created to meet international commitment, enhanced coordination and to bring harmony in inter-provincial trade and commerce of therapeutic goods. Federal Minister also appreciated the role of Media to promote the national cause of provision of health to the nation.

In order to make an effective regulation; all stakeholders including the representatives of all provincial governments were taken on board to deliberate on the following agenda items including:

Establishment of Drug Regulatory Authority and Human Resource development / recruitment rules.

Development of DRAP employees service rules.

Measures to create financial resource/fund for authority vis-a-vis accounting procedure.

Amendment of Drug Licensing and/Registering rules.

Action Plan for natural health, alternate medicine and OTC products.

Contract Manufacturing policy.
