Mirwaiz Condemns Arrest of 500 in Kashmir Raids, Calls for Immediate Release

Srinagar: Senior All Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly condemned the arrest of 500 individuals during mass raids conducted by Indian forces across the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The arrests occurred a day before Kashmir Solidarity Day, which is observed on February 5 in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, and internationally.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed his disapproval in a post on X, describing the targeting and arrest of innocent youth, their family members, and relatives as unfortunate. In his tweet, he labeled the arrests as “unprecedented” and urged the authorities in the region to release all detainees immediately.

The arrests came in the wake of an attack in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, where a retired soldier from India’s Territorial Army was killed, reportedly as part of a personal vendetta. The incident appears to have triggered the crackdown by Indian forces.

Political experts have criticized the recent string of arrests in the region, interpreting it as yet another attempt by Indian authorities to suppress the Kashmiri people’s aspirations for freedom. By detaining hundreds, including professionals and activists, the Modi government is seen as trying to instill fear and quash dissent.

These experts have called on the international community, especially human rights organizations, to break their silence and hold India accountable for its increasing violations in Kashmir. They emphasized that the struggle for justice and self-determination in the region will persist, undeterred by the stringent measures imposed by Indian authorities.
