Srinagar: All Parties Hurriyat Conference senior leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has raised concerns about the health of political detainees in Indian-administered Kashmir, urging the release of Engineer Rasheed and others held in custody.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq referenced media reports highlighting the declining health of Engineer Rasheed, a member of the Indian parliament and head of the Awami Ittehad Party. Rasheed has reportedly been moved to a hospital. Mirwaiz also noted that Tihar jail authorities have withdrawn phone and video call privileges for political prisoners under the Indian National Investigation Agency, describing these developments as distressing.
Mirwaiz expressed further concerns over the health conditions of other political prisoners, particularly the elderly. He emphasized that these issues affect not only the families of the detainees but also the broader community. He criticized the severity with which Kashmiris are being treated, suggesting it is counterproductive.
The senior leader called on the Indian government to release all political detainees, including leaders, lawyers, civil society members, media personnel, and youth. He urged that despite their incarceration, their rights should be respected and upheld according to the law.
Mirwaiz underscored the responsibility of the elected government in fulfilling its electoral promises, implying that the current situation contradicts such commitments.
