Monsoon in Pakistan: Sharp Increase in Displacement and Casualties

Pakistan: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has released an update on the severe impact of the 2024 monsoon season in Pakistan, detailing significant displacement and casualties across affected regions.

According to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the latest report covers the period from July 1 to August 27, 2024, highlighting the dire situation in Sindh province where displacement in Shangar district rose by 26%. As of August 21, approximately 9,524 individuals were displaced, with a significant number of children affected. In response, relief camps have been set up, although many displaced families are residing with relatives.

The situation is exacerbated in the Katcha areas along the riverbanks, where 35,342 people have been affected, and several families are displaced, living by roadsides or in makeshift shelters on protected bunds. The data reveals a distressing toll of 243 deaths, predominantly among children, and injuries to 446 people due to the floods, underscoring the vulnerability of the population.

The monsoon has also led to substantial damage to infrastructure and livelihoods, with thousands of homes damaged and significant livestock losses, further complicating recovery efforts in the region.
