NC Government Faces Backlash Over Support for BJP’s 2019 Actions in Kashmir

Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, political parties and analysts have criticized the National Conference (NC) government for aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on contentious matters, particularly the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the NC is under scrutiny following a draft proposal by the IIOJK Assembly Secretariat. The proposal aims to remove references to the territory’s constitution from the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House.

Political leaders and analysts have condemned this as an endorsement of the changes enforced by the Indian government on August 5, 2019. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislator Abdul Waheed Para and other political figures voiced their concerns, warning that the proposed changes would limit future legal challenges to the 2019 actions.

Observers argue that the ruling NC government, holding a majority in the committee reviewing the rules, is facilitating the BJP-RSS agenda in IIOJK. Critics have described the assembly as a “rubber stamp” for directives from Delhi.

The draft proposal, by eliminating references to the Jammu and Kashmir Constitution and residency bills, is seen as erasing Kashmir’s historical identity. Political leaders have called it a disservice to the Kashmiri people.

Analysts have compared the NC’s current stance to its past support for Delhi’s interventions in IIOJK. They suggest that the NC’s 42-seat majority, perceived as a grant from the BJP, is a reward for its compliance.

Waheed Para took to social media to express disapproval, stating that the modifications align with the constitutional changes of August 5, 2019, and signify an acknowledgment of the new status quo.

Political parties and civil society groups have resolved to oppose the move, asserting that the people of IIOJK will not accept the erasure of their identity and rights.
