One killed every fortnight in UP police encounters

Lucknow, May 26, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Indian state Uttar Pradesh has witnessed 186 police fake and other so-called encounters since Hindutva BJP leader, Yogi Adityanath took over as Chief Minister in March 2017. In the list of 186 killed in UP police fake and other so-called encounters, 96 criminals faced murder cases, two of whom faced cases of molestation and gang rape, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

This works out to more than one alleged criminal being killed by the police every 15 days, an investigation of police records by The Indian Express has revealed. Adityanath has always claimed his resolve to make his state “apradh mukt” or crime-free. In these six years, when it comes to police firing to injure (usually in the leg), the number goes up to 5,046 – more than 30 alleged criminals being shot at and injured every 15 days.

Pertinently, former Indian parliamentarian Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf Ahmed and his relatives were killed by UP police with impunity in fake encounters in April this year in the state.
