Over 50 court arrest in final phase of JKLF campaign

Srinagar, January 13, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, over 50 people including leaders and activists of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front and the relatives of Kashmiri youth facing life imprisonment courted arrest, today, during the fifth and final phase of JKLF’s Court Arrest Campaign.

These people led by the JKLF leaders, Noor Muhammad Kalwal, Sheikh Khalid Mubarak, Nisar Ahmed Jeelani and Bashir Ahmed Rather, courted arrest during a precession at Aabi Guzar in Srinagar. They raised high-pitched pro-freedom slogans on the occasion.

The detainees were later shifted to Kothi Bagh Police Station in Srinagar. More than 135 people including the JKLF Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik, have courted arrest since launch of the Campaign on January 4 to seek the revocation of the life imprisonment awarded to Kashmiri youth by Indian courts.

On the other hand, Hurriyet leaders, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash and Firdous Ahmed Shah, as well as the Jamaat-e-Islami of occupied Kashmir and the Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement in their separate statements expressed serious concern over the discovery of 60 more unmarked graves in the occupied territory by a non-political organization, the Jammu and Kashmir Voice of Victims. They demanded an impartial probe into the matter by some international organisation.

APHC leader, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, in a statement in Srinagar said that the permanent peace in South Asia was not possible till the Kashmir dispute remained unresolved. Another APHC leader, Muhammad Azam Inqilabi, in his statement urged India to shun its intransigent approach and create a conducive atmosphere for peaceful resolution of the lingering dispute.

A trooper of Indian Central Reserve Police Force committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at his residence in Majalta area of Udhampur. This raised the number of such deaths among the Indian troops and police personnel in the occupied territory to 257 since January 2007. A woman panchayat member was shot at and critically injured by unidentified gunmen at Hardshiva village in Sopore.
