Over eleven hours power outage in industrial areas would badly hit both manufacturing and exporting sectors; duration should be curtailed to reap benefits of GSP plus status: Malik Tahir Javaid

Lahore, May 09, 2014 (PPI-OT): Over eleven hours power outage in industrial areas would badly hit both the manufacturing and exporting sectors therefore the duration should be curtailed to reap the benefits of GSP plus status granted by the European Union.

This was stated by the Chairman Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF) Malik Tahir Javaid while talking to a delegation of industrialists called on him here at PIAF office on Friday.

The PIAF Chairman said that Prime Minister’s decision to cut load-shedding hours for domestic users was a welcome step but it must not be at the cost of country’s economy that was fast gaining momentum due to government efforts.

Malik Tahir Javaid said that the business community understands that there was a big gap in electricity demand and supply but at the same time it believes that the unemployment graph should remain within manageable limits. He feared that if the electricity situation remains the same for the manufacturing sector, the industry would not be able to have three working shifts.

The PIAF Chairman said that the fact remains that the energy crisis would continue to deepen until the power sector is not purged of black sheep and corrupt elements as a major chunk of line losses directly linked to power theft.

He said that the present government soon after assuming the charge made all possible efforts to restore the confidence of the business community but the recent decision to cut electricity for longer hours has sent a shockwave among the businessmen.

Malik Tahir Javaid said that the allocation of Rs 20 billion for the electricity generation would definitely improve the situation to a certain extent but definitely it is not a long term solution to the issue therefore work on all projects in the pipeline should be expedited to ensure their timely completion.

The PIAF Chairman said that the business community would continue to supplement all government steps aimed at turning the country into an economic giant.
