Pakistan Advocates for Stronger ICJ Involvement in Global Security at UN

Islamabad: Pakistan has intensified its call for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to play a more significant role in global security and the enforcement of justice in areas such as Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir. This request was presented by Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during his speech at the UN General Assembly session discussing the “Report of the International Court of Justice.”

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Akram stressed the escalating global security threats and breaches of the UN Charter, noting the indispensable role of the ICJ in on 26 Oct 2024 geopolitical climate. He emphasized the plight of populations in Palestine and occupied Jammu and Kashmir, who he said continue to endure foreign occupation and are denied their right to self-determination.

Akram also highlighted the challenges posed by the paralysis of the Security Council, often stifled by the veto power of its permanent members, underlining the ICJ’s critical function in upholding UN Charter principles and international law.

Concluding his address, Ambassador Akram urged the UN General Assembly and Security Council to strengthen the ICJ’s mandate to better defend international law and maintain global order, aiming to bolster global justice mechanisms.
